Download PNG creates a 300 PPI raster tile. Download SVG saves genuine vector shapes with physical dimensions in millimetres. Both contain one repeat unit rather than the larger on-screen preview.
For fabric or wallpaper printing, confirm repeat size and colour with your production supplier.
Named tartan and branded-looking checks are illustrative interpretations rather than registered setts or authorised reproductions. Weave, embroidery and fabric-surface effects are graphic previews, not manufacturing instructions.
What is a check pattern?
A check pattern is a surface design built from intersecting stripes, alternating squares or broken geometric shapes.
Checks appear in shirting, dresses, school uniforms, tailoring, quilting, table linen and interior textiles.
Check and plaid are often used interchangeably, although plaid commonly describes more complex stripe arrangements.
How does the check pattern generator work?
Start with a check style or search for a name such as gingham, windowpane, tartan or houndstooth.
Choose the width and height of one repeat in centimetres, adjust the number of checks and change up to four colours.
Generate draws a seamless repeat unit, displays a larger tiled preview and prepares downloadable PNG and SVG files.
Choosing a repeat size
Repeat size is the physical width and height of the tile, not the size of the entire preview.
A 12 cm repeat with four checks per axis creates roughly 3 cm spacing; increasing the count to eight gives roughly 1.5 cm spacing.
Smaller checks often suit fine shirts and accessories, while larger checks create a bolder effect on jackets, blankets and home furnishings.

Checks, plaids and fabric constructions
Plain check, gingham and checkerboard describe visual layouts. Twill, dobby, jacquard, yarn-dyed and seersucker describe fabric structures or production methods that may carry a check design.
The generator offers illustrated surface effects for these categories, but does not export loom patterns, dye recipes, stitch files or certified tartan setts.

Every generator renders a live seamless tiled preview, with stripe width, spacing, scale and repeat size in cm or in. Each control and each PNG or SVG export is tested before release.
Color references use HEX values from editable pickers, and presets stay on the canonical generator page so the same tool is never duplicated under thin URLs.
Named tartans are treated as references, not authentic setts.
